Filing your taxes can be overwhelming and confusing. To help guide you through the process I’ve listed a few resources where you can both learn more about your taxes and/or find support to file them.

Keep in mind that it’s important to do you taxes every year. Even if you don’t have an income, you may still be eligible for credits or benefits.

Learn more about the CRA/Canadian tax system:

  • Take a FREE online course – Develop an understanding of how the Canadian tax system works by taking this free online course with steps on how to do your taxes at canada.ca/learn-about-taxes
  • Find information for students by visiting canada.ca/taxes-students
  • Learn about the GST/HST credit by visiting canada.ca/gst-hst-credit
  • Click here to explore other credits and benefits that you may be eligible for
  • Beware of scammers pretending to be the CRA. When in doubt check your information in “My Account” or call the CRA. To learn what to expect if the CRA contacts you, go to canada.ca/taxes-fraud-prevention

File your taxes:

  • Find a FREE tax clinic – A volunteer from the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program can do your taxes for you, for free, if you have a modest income and a simple tax situation. Find a volunteer near you at canada.ca/taxes-help; OR
  • Do your taxes yourself online - Never done your taxes yourself before? No sweat! Free tax software is available:
  1. The canada.ca/netfile tax software guides you through the process of doing your taxes, does all the calculations for you, and helps make sure you don’t miss out on any benefits and credits you may be eligible for
  2. Register for “My Account” were you can track your refund, check your benefit and credit payments and dates, and so much more! For more information or to register, go to canada.ca/my-cra-account
  3. Sign-up for direct deposit. With direct deposit, you get your CRA payments deposited directly into your bank account. To sign up, go to canada.ca/cra-direct-deposit
