It is difficult to know when you are due for a check-up, especially if you are not feeling any unusual aches or pain. A source online may have said once every year, but your friend may have suggested once every three years. So, which one is it?

Choosing Wisely Canada recommends that adults get a check-up when you experience the following:

  • When you are sick
  • When you have a symptom that could mean illness
  • To manage chronic or ongoing conditions
  • To check on the effects of a new medicine
  • To help with risk factors like smoking or obesity
  • For prenatal care, if you are pregnant
  • For other reasons that are based on your individual needs

There is no timeline that will work for everyone, so it is important to check-in on yourself to monitor when you start feeling unusual aches, pain, lumps, or moles. Because these are recommendations, it is beneficial to keep in contact with your doctor, clinic, or other healthcare centre, incase you have concerns and need to schedule an appointment.
