It's challenging explaining your home situation to friends or peers when you have an unconventional family dynamic. It can feel alienating trying to introduce your foster parents as your aunt or uncle or pretending they’re your mom or dad. Children and youth in foster care, kin care, group homes, and other forms of in and out of home care have to navigate these difficult conversations, and often on their own. Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada heard from youth ambassadors about how challenging this is, which lead to the exciting project Something in Common.

When the new yellow Wiggle Tsehay was announced, we learned that she was in care as a baby and adopted. Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada reached out to Tsehay to see if she would be interested in working on a children’s book and here we are!

Something in Common takes place at a summer camp, where camper Leo feels like he doesn’t belong. Camp counsellor Tsehay shares her story with Leo, and then introduces him to other campers to help him feel less lonely. After meeting the other campers, Leo learns that through sharing our stories we can break down barriers and learn that we all have something in common.

Something in Common is available for free download as an e-book at somethingincommon.ca. So many people helped make this book happen including youth ambassadors, Native Family and Child Services of Toronto, Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada, and The Wiggles.

Thank you to AMJ CampbellCIBC Foundation and TPH as well as our media partners Corus Entertainment Inc., and Rogers Sports & Media.
