While pursuing your education, working, or resting, you may be trying to find new ways to keep your brain stimulated. Exploring hobbies can be overwhelming, so sometimes it’s best to start small and try out a few. I have done the research and found 5 hobbies, perfect for beginners, that you can try in your spare time:

A frying pan with vegetables cooking in it.
Cooking

This combines one of your basic necessities with something fun. Cooking does not have to be boring and bland, there are lots of great recipes you can try. This is a hobby that you can do with a friend or by yourself. Check out Sorted Food on YouTube, which combines humor and cooking. Their series Like a Chef is a great way to learn how to cook.

Someone sketching mystical foliage in a sketchbook.
Painting, Drawing, or Digital Art

You do not need to have previous visual art experience to make visual art a hobby. This is an activity that can also be about how it makes you feel. It can be fun and exciting to paint random things on paper or trying to sketch that slowly dying succulent on your desk. What your end result looks like doesn't have to matter, as long as you had fun doing it.

A person in a yellow jacket sitting down with two notebooks on their lap, writing in one.
Writing or Journaling

Writing can be enjoyable, but sometimes it is not ideal if you are a student and happen to write academically most of the time. Journaling can be fun if you like revisiting and reflecting on your feelings and experiences. If words are not your thing, you could try doodling and seeing if you can find the words you want to say in images. I enjoy this hobby because I like using my imagination to come up with fantastical stories.

Someone tying their shoe laces, getting ready to exercise.
Running or Jogging

If you enjoy exercise or are looking to start a routine, running or jogging can be a great hobby to pick up. This hobby can be a part of a long term goal you may have, like general stamina and endurance, or improving health. This could also just be for the enjoyment of running or jogging. If you are nervous to start, check out this helpful article How to Start Running, that can help answer all of your questions.

Someone holding their phone in the middle of a street with buildings on either side, trying to find the right spot to take a photo.
Photography

You can try taking photos of landscapes or ask friends and family to do portraits. This is a great hobby that can help spark creativity. There are lots of cool things you could try with your photography, including scrapbooking, creating an Instagram account for a photography page, or making collages.

Hobbies are meant to be something you enjoy, so try the activities that you believe you’ll have fun doing, and hopefully through some trial and error, you’ll find hobbies that you enjoy and can continue to pursue.
